Alvarez Stops Alfredo Angulo In 10th Round

There were many questions heading into Saturday night's PPV fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo.

How would Alvarez rebound after suffering the first loss of his career at the hands of Floyd Mayweather, Jr.?

How much support would Alvarez receive from a formerly rabid fan base that dwindled significantly following his underwhelming loss to "Money" Mayweather?

What kinds of changes would Alvarez be making to his game?

To answer the first question, Alvarez rebounded just fine against Angulo on Saturday night. There was a controversial stoppage in the 10th round after the referee had seen Angulo get punished enough, but the outcome was already certain as Alvarez was completely destroying his foe.

To answer the second question, Alvarez heard a number of boos before, during and after his fight on Saturday night. There is no doubt that his image sustained a hit after his Mayweather loss, but Saturday night's performance will help greatly towards re-establishing his fan base.

To answer the third question, Alvarez deployed a decidedly more "Money" style of fighting on Saturday night, using much more head movement and defensive boxing.

Alvarez looked fantastic as he took apart Angulo on Saturday night, and it's really too bad that the stoppage marred an otherwise great night for "Canelo".

In his post-fight speech, "Canelo" indicated two things:

1) He wants to fight again in short order

2) He wants the winner of Sergio Martinez/Miguel Cotto, who are set to fight in June

Erislandy Lara made an attempt to drum up some interest in a Canelo/Lara fight, but the crowd was decidedly lukewarm on that potential bout.

It will be interesting to see what is next for Canelo, but one thing is for sure - Angulo wasn't in his league on Saturday night.
